University Pest Reference

A reference mapping the pest control requirements that reach a university campus, zone by zone: animal facilities, laboratories, dining, child care and on-campus schools, housing, and the campus as a workplace. Primary-source anchored. Maintained by a Board Certified Entomologist.

For facilities and physical plant leaders, environmental health and safety, attending veterinarians and animal program staff, biosafety officers, dining and housing directors, procurement officers, and counsel.

No single rule covers the campus

No pest control requirement located for this reference covers a university as a whole. There is a standard for its animal facilities, another for its laboratories, another for its kitchens, its child care centers, any K–12 school it hosts, and its buildings as workplaces. Each has its own inspector, or none.

The clearest example is in Utah

Utah's school sanitation rule requires a written integrated pest management plan for every K–12 school (R392-200-18). The same rule says, at R392-200-3(2), that it “does not apply to a … place of higher education.” Its definitions add that “a higher-educational institution includes any university, college, teacher-training school, junior college, and institute of technology.”

Utah State University's Logan campus hosts the Edith Bowen Laboratory School, a K–6 public charter school. Under the rule's definitions, the school is a “school” and the university around it is not; how the rule applies in shared university buildings is an open question. Read the rule.
